When renewable generation overwhelms the transmission network, Flexitricity’s goal is to prevent waste by putting that green energy to work.
The Local Constraint Market (LCM) is a new National Grid ESO initiative to manage grid constraints in some of the most heavily congested regions. As renewable generation increases and power flows change, some areas of the network become constrained, leading to a need for more flexible, localised solutions. The LCM provides a platform for assets in these constrained areas to offer flexible capacity, either by increasing consumption or reducing generation, to alleviate pressure on the grid. This market is crucial for managing congestion and ensuring that electricity flows efficiently across the network without triggering costly grid upgrades.
The LCM is currently being operated on GB’s most constrained transmission boundaries, providing participants within Scotland the opportunity to earn revenue by responding to local grid needs. Assets such as battery storage, flexible generation, and demand-side response are well-suited for participation in this service, offering a new revenue stream for participants while supporting local grid stability. The need for LCM is greatest in the north, but any asset that can use excess renewable energy within Scotland could benefit.
At Flexitricity, we are working with National Grid ESO to bring our customers into the Local Constraint Market, helping them optimise their participation and generate additional revenue from constrained network areas.
